異国の地で同郷の仲間と団結した。
I heard that most of the emigrant people
came from the prefectures of Hiroshima,
Yamagata, Kumamoto and Okinawa in Japan.
They united with the homeland fellows
when they got in abroad.

We sang the Okinawan song titled
"Hana" for the couple
and the Okinawa kenjinkai.

One day, Mr. and Mrs.
Toyama came to our house.

「ツルの折り方、教えてください」
"Please, teach me how to fold a paper crane"

「ハズバンドから」と
差し出したお花。
3人姉妹に。
and Umeno-san continued,
"This one is from my husband
for three sisters."
They were yellow, white,
and purple colored flowers.
Various colors like us.

Umeno-san loves Origami.
We gathered around the table

who folds the paper very earnestly.

「ハワイに来て良かったですか」
ご夫婦の
ご苦労を全く知らなかったから
聞けたことだった。
"How do you like about coming to Hawaii?"
Maybe I could ask that question at that time,
because I didn't know how they had lived
their tough lives.

「ワシらどこに居ても、
沖縄に居ても農民。
今は、楽しみ多いよ」
"In Okinawa,
and wherever we were,
we were farmers.
Now we have
much more enjoyable things."

The couple kindly treats us
like their grandchildren. |

その日の夜
Umenoさんから電話がきた。
That evening, we got the phone call
from Umeno-san.
She said,
"I made a crane by myself."
